Snowflake – Taiwanese Dessert Secret 雪花栈 @ SS15, Subang

xes
Saturday, September 4th, 2010

I wish this place existed when I studied in Taylor’s College. This place serves awesome desserts and only desserts.

Its located on the 2nd floor of a shop house facing Asia Cafe. It’s a small shop and usually pack with people. Quite difficult to get a spot.

Queue to order is pretty long usually. However, meals are not served on the spot. A customer will be given an ‘UFO’.

It will beep when the meal is ready :D

My personal favourite would be the “Best Seller” (Shaven ice + Grass Jelly + Grass Jelly Ice + Taroballs + Creamer) (RM6)

The orange colour stuff is called taroballs. They’re great! Chewy with tinge of yam/sweet potato in it :D

Opening hours
Sunday – Thursday: 1pm to 10am
Friday and Saturday: 1pm to 12am

Address
No.61A, First Floor, (Directly opposite Asia Cafe, few shops away from Starbucks)

Restauran Gou Lou @ Uptown, Damansara

xes
Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Restauran Gou Lou is a new restaurant in Damansara Uptown. It claims that they are famous for fish head noodles and tom yam seafood.

I’ve been writing a food guide on Damansara Uptown. Restauran Gou Lou was next on my list.

I was there with A for late dinner. She had been there once and she said that their Tom Yam seafood is awesome.

However, I’m not a big fan of tom yam hence I ordered their Fish Head Noodles.

While waiting for my food, I took some pictures of the place.

I must say, the place is quite badly designed. The ceramic walls reminds me of a toilet. Heh

Then the food came. Big bowl of white goodness! Fish meat was abundant albeit a little bit soft inside.

Overall, the noodles tasted were fine. However, I think that the Fish Head Noodles at Win Soon @ Kuchai Lama is much better.

Ah Weng Koh Hainan Tea @ Imbi Market

xes
Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

For the past few years, I read numerous articles about Ah Weng Koh Hainan Tea (阿荣哥海南茶档) – on how great the place is. So last Monday, I made a trip to Ah Weng Koh for breakfast. My usual breakfast Yut Kee is closed on Monday hence it gave me an opportunity to explore other kopitiams.

Finding the place was a task. I’ve no idea where Imbi Market is and my Google Map wasn’t of much help. After going round and round for half an hour, I found the bloody market – only to find it is closed. NIAMAAAAAAAAAAAA!!

After complaining on Facebook, someone told me that Monday is usually a day off for Hainanese.

Not wanting to give up, I made another trip to Ah Weng Koh for breakfast on the next day. It was open! Ah Weng Koh, leii chau emm takk hoiii pinnnnnn touuuu geeehhh

Ah Weng Koh is actually a small hawker stall which shares a common area with other stalls. Finding a place to sit was quite easy. I found a spot right in front of the stall.

I ordered Hainanese coffee, toasted bread and half boiled eggs.

Coffee came in a big mug. Very aromatic and not too sweet.

My toasted polo buns – slapped with a generous amount of kaya and also a cold slice of butter. Very tasty but fattening. The outer layer was crunchy whereas the inner layer was soft!

Next contender! Half boiled eggs in a stainless steal mug with hot water inside! Had to wait for a while for my half boiled eggs to get cooked!

It was a little bit difficult to eat the half boiled egg as the heat of the egg was burning my fingers. It tasted too as well, comparable with my other favourite half boiled egg places namely Yut Kee, Pappa Rich and Village Park.

The only downside off this place is the heat. Ventilation is poor and there is no fan to cool you down. I was sweating like a pig there.

Imbi Market is just a few metres away from Pasar Rakyat. Parking space is ample. You may park by the roadside or pay RM2 for private parking.

Nanyang Rich @ Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur

xes
Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Nanyang Rich is a newly established Chinese coffeeshop located at Old Klang Road. The name Nanyang Rich is very similar with Pappa Rich, a well known chain of Chinese Coffeeshop in the Klang Valley.

The logo is somehow very similar as well to Pappa Rich’s logo. Both also got man sipping something.

Some people asked me whether I am an ambassador of Pappa Rich due to my constant tweets about them. No, I am not their official ambassador but I would love to have them as my client!

Anyway, I made a trip to Nanyang Rich to try out their stuff. Initially I was reluctant to go. I drove pass the place couple of times and the place doesn’t seem to have any customers.

With no customers = no consumption of raw materials = leftover stocks = possible stale stock = possible food poisoning.

Notwithstanding the risk of ‘bombing’ the toilet bowl whole day, I braved to Nanyang Rich for breakfast.

The interior is quite similar with Pappa Rich. The only thing that lacked was customers. I was the only customer there!

Immediately after settling down, a waiter came up to me and said, “Remember me? I used to work in Pappa Rich!”. -_-

He then said, “your usual right? steamed bread, coffee and half boiled eggs?”. I was impressed!

The selection of food and beverages are quite similar with Pappa Rich. In fact, my steamed bread, coffee and half boiled eggs tasted quite similar to the ones at Pappa Rich. Nanyang Rich is like a cheaper version of Pappa Rich!

Then now comes the issue whether Pappa Rich can successfully sue Nanyang Rich for passing off and copyright infringement. I am not sure whether Pappa Rich has initiated any action against Nanyang Rich but I think if they did they would have a high chance of success. Although Nanyang Rich may rely on the case of McDonalds v McCurry case, I am of the view that the case is distinguishable.

McCurry!

In the Court of Appeal judgement of McDonalds v McCurry case, it was stated that, among others, McDonalds and McCurry serve different type of food and the type of customers patronising them are different from each other. In the present case, Pappa Rich and Nanyang Rich serve the same type of food and their potential customers seem to be the same. It would be interesting to see a legal action in this case.

However, with the amount of customers at Nanyang Rich, I am afraid that they will die a natural death before Pappa Rich can do anything.

Restoran Sai Toh Lim @ Butterworth

xes
Monday, August 31st, 2009

After our trip to Penang, we dropped by Butterworth for lunch. I didn’t know what is good there hence I googled “Butterworth Food” and I got Restoran Sai Toh Lim as my first result.

Without hesitation, we made our way to Restoran Sai Toh Lim for its kuay teow soup.

The restaurant is made out of 2 shoplots. Business must be good for them to sustain 2 shoplots.

We first ordered the kuay teow soup.

A friend, who is a Butterworth native, dropped by and said that we should have eaten the dry version of the kuay teow as it taste better. Without hesitation, I ordered the dried version of kuay teow!

It was indeed better!

There is another version of kuay teow soup which has prawn noodles soup base. Unfortunately, they ran out of it that day. Damn, I would have ate 3 bowls if they have it!

Kluang Rail Coffee @ Kluang, Johor

xes
Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

On our way back to Kuala Lumpur, we stopped by the famous Kluang Rail Coffee at Kluang Station.
Those living in the Klang Valley would have definitely heard of Kluang Station Coffee. However, Kluang Station Coffee is not a branch of Kluang Rail Coffee but its history can be traced back to Kluang Rail Coffee.

Kluang Rail Coffee operates at Kluang train station and has been in business since 1938. The first thing that came into my mind when arriving at Kluang Rail Coffee is their coffee. It was commendable. I even bought 3 packets of their coffee home :D

Immediately after sitting down, we grabbed packets of nasi lemak and mee siam which were placed on the table. I was told that their nasi lemak is excellent. It was indeed excellent but its so small until I could finish it in 3 spoons! The sambal was wrapped with a piece of banana leaf and it wasn’t too spicy. I whacked 3 packets of it!

Feeling dissatisfied, I ordered their toasted Polo Bun and toasted bread. They came with a thick slice of frozen butter together with loads of kaya. My personal favourite is the toasted bread. It was much softer and taste so much nicer!

Perhaps the only drawback about this coffeeshop is the level of service. The waiters were not that friendly and one of the waiters, a Chinese chap, looked as if he wanted to beat us up for ordering too much. -_-

YHK Yong Tow Foo @ Damansara Utama / Uptown

xes
Monday, September 1st, 2008

YHK Yong Tow Foo is one of the famous Yong Tow Foo restaurants in the Klang Valley. Their main shop is located at Pudu. This review would only be on their Damansara Utama branch.

The only thing that attracts me here is their chee cheung fun. If you order the ‘big’ version of it, you’ll get a bowl of noodles in the shape of Mount Kinabalu. Their chee cheung fun has a soft and springy texture and its served with a generous serving of sweet sauce.

Big & Small

Unfortunately, their selection of yong tow foo is poor and is unhygienically displayed. So far so good, no diarrhea.

The drinks on the other hand is nothing to shout about save for one drink which appears to look like orange juice with barley extracts on the bottom. When I first saw it, I thought it was orange juice with barley. But it’s actually barley water. It tasted good!
