You abandoned us…

Lately, a high school friend called me. He said…
“I am unlike you. I still keep in touch with our friends and you…you forget about us when you have new friends in KL.”
Honestly, i don’t think that i have ever abandoned any of my friends from High School. When i first came to KL, no one bother to contact me. I was alone in a strange land.
When i managed to contact them, they never bothered to meet up with me. Although, evetually i managed to find where they were and paid them a visit. How did they treat me? I was left sitting in a corner like a stranger, an unwanted guest. That was the last straw, i decided that if they did not take the effort to stay in touch me, why should i?
Over the years, i lost contact with all of them. Although, i am only left with two friends in my hometown but i never regretted because i still have two loyal friends.

Good evening Tun-tun, Tan Sri-Tan Sri, Datuk-Datuk, Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bass Agents & the Dark Raverz proudly present:

Glow Dance Club is one of the newest clubs in Kuala Lumpur.
Couple weeks back, I went to check out Glow Dance Club @ Kuala Lumpur. The Bass Agents were spinning.
The crowd in Glow is predominantly Shufflers. Hence, one can see loads of shuffling action going on. Great place to learn shuffle as well.
Another unique thing about the club is the arch in front of the club.

The Client part 3

I am very stress out this week…so i am gonna bitch a lot.

I am at the bloody OR office 4 times this week. My face is on their blacklist now. All of them will give me the lansi “what do you want look” from now onward.

Anyway Mr.C, the client whom i am doing the file for isn’t helping at all. He think since i am helping him with his legal issue, i am his slave.

Mr.C: Can you pass the document to my place, NOW!!!

me: Where is your place.

Mr.C gave me the name of his place.

me: I don’t know how to go there. BTW, i am not from KL so i am not very familiar with the roads.

Mr.C: Where are you from?

me: Sarawak. (a state in the East Malaysia which the West Malaysian think that is extremly backward and the people there still live on trees)

Mr.C: ooooh (in a you are so ulu tone!!!)

Later at night,

Mr C: Where is my document?

me: I am gonna drop it at your place later.

dooooooooooooooooooooo…he put down the phone. Fucker, how rude!!!

Since he had been extremly rude and lansi (arrogant) to me, i am not gonna be nice to him either. Anyway, who is he to order me around after 5:30pm. I decided to go over his place at 10:30. First, i went to One Utama to have Burger King with my friend. Also, to clarify the directions from my friend.

By 10:30, i went and dropped the documents at his condo’s guard house. Then, i called him…I know lar, i am not suppose to call someone whom i don’t know very well after 10pm but hell, i am professional. Further, i must be responsible to my client. So i couldn’t be arsed about manner, i WILL call him!!!

me: Hello, C. I dropped your documents at your guard house.

C: *sleepy voice* mmmm…ooooh.

After that, i called my big boss to inform him about this..
.
*background music* bom chi bom chi bom chi

Boss: Frank, speak up! I am in a pub. I cannot hear you!!

There were a lot of girls laughing at the background…

Walou, that is the difference between an associates and the managing partner.

Note: I know there are a lot of mistake with tenses but i can’t be arsed to correct them. If you wanna complain, you have to buy me a jug of beer first.

One day trip to Melaka

Last week, I was given a task at the Malacca High Court. It was quite a challenge as it was something that usually takes weeks to do but I have to get it done on the day itself. I had to file a draft order, get it marked and then file it together with the fair order!
I waited from 830AM to 5PM. It was the longest wait ever.. .
Despite the long wait, the Court staff of Malacca High Court were superb. They were very polite and efficient unlike a certain Court’s staffs which only have 2 vocabs which is “TUNGGU LA” (WAIT LA).
The Registrar was also very nice. I was expecting him to throw a fit but when I requested his help, he immediately despatched his staff to help me. w00t!

The officer and me

Yesterday, i called the OR office…
me: Can i speak to Madam R?
Clerk: She is in a meeting, call back at 3:30, plz.
Hence, i called back at 3:30
Clerk: She is engage on the line. Plz call back 15 mins later
15 mins later…
Clerk: She is having a meeting, plz call me at 4
Therefore, i called back at 4.
Clerk: She is still in the meeting. Please call back at 4:30
4:30? She thought that i am dumb ar? All the officers went off at 4:30. Thus, i call back at 4:15
Clerk: Can you please call back before 4:30
What did she mean by before 4:30? 4:15 IS before 4:30. So i called at 4:20. Guess what? No one picked up the phone…

KL Bar Annual Dinner & Dance 2005

One of the privileges of working in a big or established firm in Kuala Lumpur is that you get to attend the KL Bar Annual Dinner for free. This year around, our firm has once again sponsored us tickets to attend it.

It was held at J.W. Marriot, one of the posh places in town. This year’s theme is International Costume. I didn’t wear any though, all I had was my usual tshirts and slacks and jacket. However, a number of people dressed up in all sorts of costumes. Lee Shih wore a matador’s costume. Some girls were in cheongsam, saris and even kimonos.

Lee Shih
We had free flow of beer again this year. AT, A friend of mine was already lobster red when I saw him. Another friend of mine came up to me and pointed at AT, “You see this Chinaman, after few drinks, they’ll turn red”. I couldn’t help but to laugh.
Another 2 of my former Sheffield Uni classmates came as well, Alan Teo and J.
When I first saw J, I screamed, “ooiiii…big ass J!!!”.
J: O_O!!!! FUCKER!! WHAT DID YOU CALL ME?!?! *proceeds to punch*
Me: *ow*
It’s been a while since I saw J, it was great catching up with her!
Few hours later, AT, a colleague of Janet, came over to me and said, “Eh? What did you call J just now? Now all her colleagues are calling her by that name!”.

Mr. Harith Iskandar. – “you want some of these?”
Malaysian Comedian Mr. Harith Iskandar was invited to do a stand up comedy. Initially we were expecting him to recycle his jokes which we always see on TV or previous dinners. However, this year round, his jokes are new. He made me realise that we Malaysians, have blatant disregard to our rules.
He also made fun of Australian’s carefree attitude. Many years ago, he had 2 hugeeeeee fatttt Australian girls over for holidays. It was many years ago hence bus was the only source of transport. So the girls, being carefree Australians, walked out with shorts and singlet…and without bra. Imagine 2 hugeeeee Australian girls in singlet and shorts and without bra. So they proceeded to board a bus.
Malay boys in the bus: *O* *stares in disbelieve*
One of the Australian girls noticed that they boys were staring at their tits. She stopped, grabbed her own tits and said to the Malay boys, “You want some of these???”.

Finalist for the costume competition
Lee Shih won the best costume competition! He and Ashraf were on a tie but Lee Shihbeing a friendly and jolly chap, won based on clap-o-meter, whoever gets the loudest cheer will win. While Lee Shih’s colleagues cheered for him, YS, Low and I stood up to cheer for him as well. He won a 3 days 2 nights stay in Bali!
This year’s lucky draw prizes are much better. Unfortunately, I didn’t win any of those.
A friend of mine ran up to the stage when he heard his number being called. Right after he passed his ticket to the MC, the MC said, “this guy had too much to drink.. this is not your number!”. My friend walked down from the stage, deeply embarrassed. Damn.
David won the best prize of all, he got a RM3000 travel voucher to anywhere in the world!! But after they announced RM3000 travel voucher to anywhere in the world, the first thing on my mind was a free trip to Japan! and also out of no where…“mmmm….travel to Genting Highlands 30 times!”. Wtf..
A guy won a bottle of Black Label and a bottle of Whisky plus 2 imported fine glasses on the lucky draw. He ran up to the stage and celebrated with his mates with his newly gained prizes. But few seconds later, the MC announced, “I’m sorry there seems to be a mistake. The prize is not of Black Label and a bottle of Whisky. Please come up to return the prize”.
It’s amazing how one’s luck would change within a split second. However, he was sporting enough to come up to stage to return the prize. The MC then announced, “You actually won a blender”. Doh!

Alan Teo, Lai Chee & I

Janet & I!

The night ended right exactly @ 12am. It was a good night. Congrats to the organizing commitee for their excellent job!

Malaysian detainees routinely tortured

When i was doing my Legal Aid, i had the opportunity to interview a few client who had just been released from the lock up. One of them told me that the police threaten to arrest his whole family if he did not confess to the crime. A majority of them told me that the police hit them with a phonebook and some said that the police hit the bottom of their foot with a metal ruler.
The article below has more detail on what the detainees went through :-
———————————————————————-
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 (AFP) – Detainees held under Malaysia’s notorious security laws are routinely tortured during interrogations, stripped naked, beaten with broomsticks and threatened with rape, former inmates said Monday.
Former Internal Security Act (ISA) detainees and their supporters gathered at the state-backed Malaysian Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM) to condemn the act and push for it to be repealed as it marks its 45th year in operation.
The ISA, which allows for indefinite detention without trial, is “a licence to torture,” said Kua Kia Soong, director of leading rights group Voice of the Malaysian People (SUARAM).
Malaysia cannot call itself a democratic country while retaining a law that permits gross violation of human rights, he said, urging authorities to launch a probe into claims of torture and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“All human beings who were disgusted at the torture and humiliation of the detainees at Abu Ghraib must open their eyes to the reality of the ISA,” he said, referring to the jail in Iraq where US abuse of prisoners came to light.
Malaysia must also “abolish the ISA and all forms of detention without trial; charge all detainees in an open court or else release them immediately and unconditionally,” he added.
Goh Kean Seng, 55, who was detained between 1974 and 1982 for allegedly being pro-communist, described an ordeal of sexual humiliation while behind bars.
“I was stripped naked most of the time. Police officers booed me on my shrunken penis, sneering at me that I would become impotent after their ‘special treatment’,” he said.
Police also threatened to rape his girlfriend if he did not confess, and punching, kicking and beating with a broomstick were common during his five-day interrogation, he said.
Patricia Lourdes Irene, 54, who was held for a year in 1987, said she was also threatened with rape if she did not cooperate.
“They said they had raped many times before and I believed them,” she
said.
One inmate developed schizophrenia and never recovered, said Ban Ah Kam, 59, who was detained for 10 years from 1968. He said he was hit with a broomstick until it broke.
Pressure group Abolish ISA Movement said in a report that some detainees were subjected to non-stop interrogation for days, had their heads bashed against the wall, needles stuck in their fingernails and nails inserted into their genitals.
It said they were made to strip and sit on open bottles, forced to re-enact the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, had their heads pushed into toilet bowls and were force-fed urine.
“Our stand is very clear. Detention without trial is an extreme form of detention. It denies a person the right to liberty, the right to appear in a public trial and the right to assume innocence until proven guilty,” SUHAKAM commissioner Siva Subramaniam said.
Subramaniam said the government seemed increasingly keen on using the ISA, even in cases like forgery, which would normally have been dealt with in the courts.
The ISA, originally designed to combat a communist rebellion half a century ago, allows for two-year detention periods without trial, which can be renewed indefinitely.
Critics say that the law, which has been used to arrest more than 10,000 people since 1960, is used to crush political dissent. The government maintains it is an essential tool against terrorism.
Malaysia is currently holding over 100 people in detention under the ISA, more than 80 of whom are suspected Islamic militants.
