Restoran Y & L (妙记面粉糕)

I was in Kuantan for a friend’s wedding few weeks ago. My friend arranged for a home stay for me to stay. The room was a little creepy. So much so that I tweeted, “In Kuantan stayin in a creepy hotel. Aaaaaaahhh leave me alooonneeeee”. A friend responded and we eventually ended up talking about food.

One of the places she recommended is Y&L restaurant for its excellent pan mee.

It took me a while to find the place. My only landmark was Public Bank and there were three in town!

The specialty of this shop is pan mee (handmade noodles). I ordered their dry version of pan mee.

It came in a sweet thick sauce, fishballs, sliced mushroom, soft minced meat and. topped with fried ikan bilis. It was very nice! It reminds me of Kota Kinabalu’s sang yuk mee (pork noodles). The soft minced meat deserves special mention because it dissolves in your mouth. mmmm

It’s so nice that I went back there again the next day for lunch!

I’ll start this blog entry with a lame joke which I heard from a friend.

Char Siew Pao (Roast pork steamed bun) and Tai Pao went to watch a sad movie.
After the movie, Tai Pao cried like a bitch. More than Char Siew Pao.
Why is that so?
Answer: Because Tai Pao got more filling (feeling).

Char Siew Pao and Tou Sa Pao (Red Bean Steamed Bun) went to watch a sad movie.
After the movie, Char Siew Pao cried but Tou Sa Pao didn’t.
Why is that so?
Answer: Because both of them have different “fillings” (feeling)

Char Siew Pao and Mantau went to watch a sad movie.
After the movie, Char Siew Pao cried but Mantau didn’t cry at all.
Why is that so?
Answer: Because Mantau has no “filling” (feeling)

Lame but it made me LOL.

Anyway, A and I was at Kuantan for a wedding. We didn’t have much time to explore Kuantan food but I’ve been to most of the recommended eateries in Kuantan. You can read my Kuantan Food Guide for details.

On our way back to KL, we dropped by Sri Jaya for their famous steamed bun. This explains why I have a lame joke about paos.

Unfortunately, when we arrived, we were told that the steamed buns were sold out. I was told that the steamed buns are sold from 12pm and it will usually finish by 2pm – 3pm. I was there at 3pm and all the steamed buns were sold out.

Instead, we were greeted with empty large dimsum baskets filled flies. MANY MANY FLIES. Thank God they ran out of steamed buns!

Immediately after this picture was taken, a fly flew into my car -__-

We decided to try something that isn’t covered with flies – egg tarts. For RM7, you can have 6 pieces of egg tarts of assorted flavours such as pandan, carrot and even dragon fruit! We chose the original, pandan and carrot flavours.

I must say that the egg tarts were awesome. The crust was moist but crunchy. I hope the flies didn’t play a part in it.

Pandan flavour is the best! Original flavour is good. Carrot is just so-so.

To those driving to Kuantan or from Kuantan, do drop by Restoran Sin Tong Kok. To get there, exit at Sri Jaya and head to Sri Jaya town. It’s a short drive from the toll.

Restoran Hoi Yin @ Teluk Chempedak, Kuantan

This place was recommended to us for lunch. Located across our hotel, we walked to this place and immediately plonked our butts on their seats.

Getting a seat was a problem initially as the place was packed with patrons. Fortunately, a group of people left after a minute.

This place is famous for their curry noodles. That was the only thing I saw on everybody’s table. I heard the other alternative is their dry Mee Kicap.

The curry noodles came in a thick soup. There wasn’t a thick layer of oil – which I usually hate. There was only few pieces of chicken but it was enough for me.

My overall impression of the place is only mediocre. Ah Loy Assam Laksa in OUG tasted so much better.

Crocodile Rock @ Kuantan

Since we only had one night in Kuantan, we had to choose a place to eat carefully. We didn’t want to spoil our last night in Kuantan with sub standard food.

This restaurant was recommended by a friend and it is located in a one storey bungalow – with weed overrunning the compound (later found out that its not their compound but their neighbour’s compound)

Just like any other converted bungalows, the restaurant has inner and outer sections. We avoided the outer section cause we didn’t want to end up as mosquito food.

The interior looks quite cozy.

It also had many paintings on the wall.

We ordered a bowl of spaghetti carbonara and a pizza.

I must say that the food was fine. Their service was good and the ambiance was excellent!

After dinner, we hung out at the place reading one of their coffee table books. Great place to hang out in Kuantan!

Dessert @ Kuantan

Mustafa Cendol

Kuantan was boiling hot hence we decided to cool ourselves with a nice bowl of Cendol @ Mustafa Cendol.

In KL, you can get a bowl of cendol from a small stall and you probably have to eat by the roadside e.g TTDI cendol. But Mustafa Cendol must be something in Kuantan, it’s like a restaurant!

The bowl of cendol came in a stainless steel bowl, which I think makes the cendol retains its cool. It’s not too sweet – just nice!

Other than cendol, I heard that this place serves good ABC and rojak.

Keropok Lekor @ Kuantan Mini Zoo

Yes, at all places, you can get good keropok lekor (dried fish crackers) in Kuantan Zoo. Its only 30 cents per piece (or RM1 for 3 pieces). It’s crispy from the outside but soft inside.

Deep fried crab!!

However, be careful while in Kuantan Mini Zoo. I saw a monkey kidnapping someone’s keropok lekor after he walked away to take some pictures. I’ll fight to death if a monkey does that to me!!
