4th March 2007 marks Chap Goh Mei. Chap Goh Mei means the 15th night of Chinese New Year. Various activities are planned to mark this very traditional occasion and one of them is the orange/tangerine throwing ceremony.
In the past, Chap Goh Meh was one of the few occasions where eligible young ladies, transformed into scorching beauties, were allowed out from the confines of their homes. Eager gentlemen could only admire longingly at all the passing beauties, as the lovely ladies were always accompanied by an entourage of the fiercest looking aunts and amahs (servants)! These young maidens (and spinsters) would throw oranges into the sea as a gesture of hope to wed good husbands. To keep this quaint tradition alive in modern times, orange throwing has transmogrified into a competition of sorts, where oranges thrown into the sea by girls (single or otherwise) would be scooped up by boys in boats. The boat with most oranges would be declared the winner. (Soure: http://www.tourismpenang.gov.my/article.cfm?id=28)
For the past 26 years, I’ve never been to such ceremony. However, Ping, Yap and I heard that such ceremony is held every year at one small lake at Taman Jaya, Petaling Jaya.
In keeping with the tradition, I have got hold of one banana from my Dad’s fruit basket.

Instead of putting my name, I wrote Ping’s name and mobile number on the banana with permanent marker pen! WAHAHAHHA. Although he objected to it, I was determined to pass it to a chick.

We got there around 10PM. The place was packed to the brink! We got there just in time for the orange/tangerine throwing ceremony. Oranges /tangerines are only thrown in to the lake at a designated time.
Just right after the MCs announced that its time to throw the oranges/tangerines, the girls, ranging from beauty queens to hippo sized ladies, launched their oranges/tangerines into the lake and within no time, many guys lunged straight to the concrete shore for the oranges.

Loads of people
Throughout the entire night, oranges were seen to be flying in to the lake. However, there were numerous times were oranges flew from the people at standing in front of the shore. Many of the said oranges were actually rejects. Girls, please use permanent marker next time.

Ah Wei – 22 years old
We met one of Yap’s friends, Eva. It was my first time meeting her.
I overheard her talking to Yap.
Eva: Hey, I want to throw my orange in to the lake.
I turned around and said, “Oh, don’t need to throw, we can exchange!”
Yap then introduced Eva to me. We exchange fruits thereafter.
Me: actually, that’s not my name and number in the banana. It’s his (pointing to Ping).
Eva: GIVE ME BACK MY ORANGE!!!
O_____O
I was fortunate to be able to squeeze through the crowd to see how oranges were collected from the lake. Many guys were armed with fish nets (some even extended!) to fish the oranges out. It was pretty hazardous as many oranges kept flying from the back. Many guys were hit by flying oranges.

Fishing for oranges
I heard that some people actually bypassed the orange throwing ceremony by approaching their target (girl) directly to ask for her number. So I was pretty determined to give Ping’s banana away to some chick.
However, before I could do so, one of my former schoolmates got hold of it and threw it into the crowd!
Me: Hopefully someone picks it (banana) up and calls Ping
KB: Yeah, some guy would call and say, “F*cker, your banana hit my head just now!”
LOL !!

  1. I was there last year and brought an Aussie ABC friend who was so fascinated that a culture like this is still so alive, what more, among young Malaysian urban chinese………Funny thing is, if you are bold enough and already see something you desire……Forget about the throwing ceremony where some weirdos could get hold of your number and just do an approach there and then…….
C’mon ladies, be bold, its alright to make the first move.
As for Ping, the sort of female he desires will not be found at these event :P………

  2. Xes: “Gime Back My Orange” <—So MEAN!!
    Karheng: LMFAO!!!u’ll never know dude..
Good luck to Ping, Hopefully that the one who pickup the banana is a “SHE”
