San Francisco 2011 – Overview

After 10 days in the San Francisco, I’m finally back in Malaysia. Home sweet home!

Union Square

San Francisco is a beautiful city. It’s extremely hilly – even hillier than Sheffield. It has plenty of beautiful buildings with great architecture.

A shopping centre just for ladies!

The only complaint that I have is that there are many homeless people on the streets.

The demographic of San Francisco is quite strange. On one street you have all the high end retail outlets but on the next street, you’ll find homeless or dodgy looking people roaming around.

Many of these homeless people harass passerby for spare change or even to make strange comments. Some were out of their mind – screaming incoherent words out of nowhere. I’ve learned that the best way to deal with them is to ignore them. It works!

There are many street buskers too. This one took a photo with Will Smith!

The weather wasn’t very kind. It was extremely cold and even rained at some days. I had to wear 3 to 4 layers of t-shirts before going out. One friend got sick and was slapped with a USD300 medical bill after seeing a local doctor. Fortunately for me, all I had was sore throat.

I spent 5 days attending the International Trade Mark Conference (INTA). This is my 3rd time attending this conference and it was good. Great networking sessions and met plenty of new (probably 60 over) and interesting contacts. I met some old contacts and spent great time with them. Networking is not the amount of people I meet but the amount of quality time I spent with them.

Conference area. Spent a lot of time here meeting people. When I have free time, I will chat with some random stranger.

We arrived a day early to accustom our body clock to US timing. Unfortunately, we took a nap at 2pm, with the intention of waking up an hour later, but woke up at 7pm instead. Gah.

With regret on our mind, we walked to Chinatown for dinner.

Took us almost 20 minutes – went through a tunnel

Was briefly entertained by a Chinese band

But was served terrible food. Uh.

During the conference, day time was spent on meetings and night time was spent on receptions or dinners.

Had meeting at an associates’ office. Great view!

Receptions were held at very nice places except for one reception where we lined up for 45 minutes under the rain. The bouncers were only allowing 2 to 3 people every 5 to 10 minutes. Some people gave up halfway and went away. When we were about to get in, the bouncer announced that the venue is full and they are no longer taking anyone in! Some chaps were so furious that they started swearing at the bouncers. We, on the other hand, adjourned to a cafe nearby with our Chinese associates.

I stayed in a boutique hotel called Hotel Abri. It was a nice hotel with excellent facilities and location. It’s just a few minutes away from Moscone Center, the conference venue.

After the conference, I moved to Globetrotters Inn Hostel, which was a far cry from Hotel Abri. My hostel has only a bed, a sink and a chair. No heater and table! I had to use the window ledge to put my laptop :s

The hostel is pretty much run down and not very clean. However, service was great. When I was waiting for my bus to take me to the airport, I bumped into a staff of the hostel. She was concerned that my bus was late and even called the bus operator for me. It was very kind of her.

I extended my stay for 2 nights to check out San Francisco. I went cycling, did some shopping and visited the gay center of San Francisco namely Castrol Street.

The journey back to KL took me around 20 hours. It was rather uneventful except for one occasion where a lady decided to disembark from our flight before flying. I thought she had some prediction that the flight will crash. At that point, I thought this flight will be the end of me :s

More details about the trip later!

Greetings from San Francisco!

For real this time. It’s my 4th day here and I am still fighting jet lag. The time difference between Malaysia and SF is 15 hours. While everyone is sleeping in Malaysia, I’ll be awake. Makes my afternoon meetings difficult.

It’s been cold here. Shivering cold sometimes. I didn’t bring a thick jacket.

The conference has been good so far. Plenty of meetings and met couple of new people. The name cards that I get now is less than what I used to get on my first INTA conference. Probably because I know more people now – people I see once a year and yet speaks like old time friends.

I’m staying in a boutique hotel called Abri Hotel. It’s small but it’s very near the convention centre.

Every morning there is a strange man shouting incoherent words holding a bible at the front doors of the convention centre. One street away there is a homeless man practicing his kungfu moves on random people walking pass him. Yesterday, there was a marathon and many people were in costumes. Some decided to ditch costumes and ran naked.

There are many strange people in SF.

Greetings from San Francisco!

Well, not yet. I’m still in the airport waiting for my flight. It’s going to be a gruelling 20 hours flight. First to HK and then straight to SF.

I’ll be attending the annual International Trade Mark Association (INTA) conference in SF. Last year, it was at Boston. It’s been a year! Time flies!

I will be turning off my Blackberry throughout the trip. Last year, I raked up a RM4000 bill for Blackberry charges. If anyone wishes to contact me, just email me or DM me at Twitter.

Will try to blog when I’m in SF!

Boston Food Guide

My apologies for the lack of updates. I’ve been extremely busy these few weeks.

This would be my last post for Boston. This entry is to keep up with my practice of having a food entry for my travel entries.

Quincy Market

This place is excellent for a quick and cheap bite. The market has numerous outlets with different types of food here. However, food is mediocre.

Clamp chowder is quite common.

Every morning I’ll come here for breakfast and each time I come here, I’ll try a different store.

Doghouse is one of the better ones and they serve hots dogs and sausages. Boston Barker Deluxe is quite awesome.

Faneuil Hall

Opposite Quincy Market lies Faneuil Hall. Food stalls are located at the ground level. Red Barn Coffee Roasters is highly recommended by a lot websites.

It’s quite good and I think it’s on par with Starbucks coffee. My personal favourite would be their cafe latte πŸ˜€

Union Oyster House

This place gotta be the highlight of Boston food. It is just a street away from Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall. It claims to be the oldest restaurant in Boston and the oldest restaurant in continuous service in the U.S. Its doors have been open to diners since 1826. You can read about their history here.

Due to its popularity and long history. famous patrons such as Daniel Webster and Kennedy Family were regulars here. There is also booth dedicated to JFK.

The meal here starts off with some free cornbread as appetizer. I must warn that this place is a little bit pricey hence check the price before you order.

We ordered lobster and oysters. I’m not a big fan of oysters as it grosses me out. However, the oysters here were fine. Lobster on the other hand was good. The way they served it reminded me of a dead cockroach.

For dessert, do order the Boston Cream Pie. It was awesome.

Some patrons had posted negative comments about this place. They complained about their price and lousy service. My experience there was good. I think it’s worth the money.

Melbourne Shuffle & Malaysian Police

Melbourne Shuffle has taken another great step in Malaysia. I just saw a video of 2 men dressed in what seems to look like our Malaysia police uniform! They can liquid and do the running man yo! Must be practising to go undercover!

I wonder if this is real! If it is, they should be prepared for DJ Flowers, a 69 years old granny!

Barossa Valley, Australia 2009

[Note: Last entry for my Melbourne and Adelaide trip!]

A day after the wedding, Joe and Vivian brought us to the Barossa Valley, a place well known for its vineyards.

Lawyers?

The drive there took us less than an hour. However, we reached there quite late and our only available choice was Jacob’s Creek.

Wine tasting was free and a menu was provided to us to choose our wines.

Some tasted good and some tasted terrible. One even tasted like tit tar chau (Chinese medicated oil, usually used to rub bruises).

If it taste bad…spit it heree..heehee

My personal favourite is the moscato, a sweet sparkling white wine best served chilled.

Sparkling red Shiraz. I’m not a big fan of red wine though. It all happened when I downed a bottle and had it coming out from my nose.

Other than wine tasting, the place also offers a scenic and picturesque wine of the vineyard and its hilly surroundings.

After Jacob’s Creek, we made a trip to the Whispering Wall. The Whispering Wall is actually a reservoir by the name Barossa Reservoir.

If you stand at one end of the dam, you can actually heard the voice of another person clearly at the other end. It was as if the person is standing next to you!

Dont put your ears too close to the wall otherwise you will get these creepy crawlies into your ears.

The end!

Adelaide, Australia 2009

While I was in Melbourne, I made a trip to Adelaide for a wedding and also to MC the wedding.

Signboard at Melbourne Airport – don’t make jokes about bombs in bag.

Adelaide is a small quaint and tranquil city. Although it was summer, it was quite cold. It felt like winter! Thank god I brought a jacket along.

I stayed at the bride’s house. The groom house was about 8 houses away. The wedding was a mixture of Vietnamese and Chinese wedding. We had the chip san leong ceremony (the tasks were pretty mild) and also tea ceremony. Further, there was also a church ceremony at an old church.

Check out the cute outfits! πŸ˜€

Moments after the bride threw a bouquet of flowers. Check out the lady on the right in pink dress…fightooooooooo…..hoorryuukueeennn…

The wedding was held in a restaurant of some sort of Italian related club. There was a dance floor for people to dance (not fengtau but ballroom dancing etc). A and I MC-ed the wedding. We made little preparation as we only confirmed our participation as MC a day before the wedding. Fortunately, we didn’t screw up.

My friends bought their own wedding cake! Looks tasteeehhhh

Lobster yo!

The wedding went well! On the next day, the groom and the bride brought us to Barossa Valley πŸ˜€ More details later

I was only in Adelaide for 4 days. The 1st day was spent on preparing for the wedding, 2nd day was spent on the wedding, 3rd day was spent at Barossa Valley and the last day was spent on last minute shopping. I overshopped, spent rm1600 on 2 suits. I won’t be buying any more suits for the next 5 years!

Climbing @ Lactic Factory, Melbourne

Before my Melbourne trip, I wanted to climb outdoors. Wei Chen showed me couple of his Mount Arapiles outdoor bouldering pictures and it looked pretty good!

Unfortunately, it was summer time hence it is quite dangerous. A bush fire might happen while we are there. Therefore, we decided to climb indoors instead. My friends brought me to Lactic Factory, a bouldering gym not too far from the city centre. I was there 2 times in a week!

The gym consists of two floors. Each floor has a bouldering wall. The second floor wall has a roof.

The gym also has a very nice lounge with loads of book regarding climbing.

The entrance fee is about AU$13 per entry. First timers are required to sign a disclaimer form (as usual).

Routes are pre-set by the owner and changed from time to time. Dont need to crack your head to set your own routes.

View from 2nd floor

The climb was awesome as they had plenty of routes to try. Most of them power moves. Tire my muscles quite quickly.

Most of my friends were pretty good climbers. Some of them climb 3 times a week. They said there’s nothing much to do in Melbourne hence they climb 3 times a week. Fortunately, fatty Gavin Tan was around and hence I didn’t qualify as the worst climber wahahahha

The only drawback about this place is the toilet. It doesn’t have a place to wash your feet. I had to do some yoga moves to get my feet up into the basin.

Unique Chocolates

I was in a convenient store buying chocolates for my friends and I spotted these..

50% His and 50% Hers. Look at the “equal” distribution..

Girth Control – Helps you avoid thinking about “it” for up to 15 minutes! Name and packaging made to look like birth control pills

I’m a Libra!

Bochox – For relief from symptoms of wrinkles and crow’s feet. Who needs Botox?

From my research, Girth Control and Bochox are made by a New Zealand company by the name Bloomsberry & Co.

Source: http://www.dionlabel.com

Bloomsberry & Co. chocolate is far from boring.

Bloomsberry & Co is taking a bite out of the chocolate industry with their witty packaging and delicious chocolate. Graphic designer Giles Barker and his wife Vanessa Kettelwell are the brains behind Bloomsberry & Co. Their chocolate is harvested from cacao trees in warm, often tropical, areas. Cacao bean is one of the main ingredients in chocolate and is found within the cacao pods, these pods are harvested once they hit the ground. The quality of Bloomsberry & Co chocolates are due to the patience and precision they take during the harvesting period.

“There are some big players in the chocolate category, but by creating a unique gift item with a story behind our brand, Bloomsberry transcends that,” says Mr. Barker. “Chocolate packaging is typically a very traditional and serious business – we are coming at it from a very different position.” Different position is right! In a world of boring packaging these chocolate bars contain names such as bochox, emergency chocolate, girth control, and lusty. With their bold colors and humorous slogans it’s no wonder why this New Zealand based company is now spreading like wildfire. Bloomsberry & Co can be found in Manchester, Melbourne, Paris, Singapore, and New York. The chocolate bars can be found in retail chains such as Barnes & Noble, Borders books, and Whole Foods Market. To learn more about Bloomsberry & Co you can visit their website here.

Check out their Facebook page for more stuff! And not to mention their official page.
