Timothy & Kabien’s Wedding – Part I

Finally, after 10 years of courtship, high school friends Timothy and Ka Bien have tied the knot. Our weekend was filled with pre-wedding dinner events such as bachelor’s night and the ‘chip san leong’ ceremony. I think I spent around RM1000 for drinks during the bachelor’s night and angpow. So poor.

In Chinese tradition, prior to the wedding dinner, the groom has to head to the bride’s home to ‘collect’ his bride. In Cantonese, this is called ‘chip san leong’.

The groom will appoint a few guys (heng tai – brother in Cantonese, and not hentai) to accompany him to the bride’s house. The bride, on the other hand, will appoint a few evil girls (chi mui – sister in Chinese) to protect the bride from the groom and the heng tai. The evil chi mui will plot all sorts of evil task to make the groom and heng tai suffer before the groom can get his bride.

Our attire was white shirt, black slacks and a pink tie (provided by Timothy). Before the “chip san leong” ceremony could start, the heng tais already had a hard time getting up reaching Timothy’s house at 730AM on a Sunday morning.

Timothy’s house

Timothy’s ride was a beige 1950s Jaguar 2.4 litre MK I, a classic car which he found on the internet.

By 9AM, we reached Ka Bien’s house. The front entrance was barricaded by the evil chi muis, all dressed in pink. With them, a list of tasks was prepared for the heng tai to perform before they could proceed to ‘collect’ Ka Bien.

Today! Earth Hour 2008

On March 31 2007, for one hour, Sydney made a powerful statement about the greatest contributor to global warming – coal-fired electricity – by turning off its lights. Over 2.2 million Sydney residents and over 2,100 businesses switched off, leading to a 10.2% energy reduction across the city. What began as one city taking a stand against global warming caught the attention of the world.
In 2008, 24 global cities will participate in Earth Hour at 8pm on March 29. Earth Hour is the highlight of a major campaign to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take the simple steps needed to cut their emissions on an ongoing basis. It is about simple changes that will collectively make a difference – from businesses turning off their lights when their offices are empty, to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby.
Be a part of it.

WWF-Malaysia – Save the Turtles!

I am fortunate to be selected by WWF-Malaysia to write an advertorial for them. I’ve always been actively involved in taking steps to preserve the nature. In this regard, I’ve always recycle every piece of paper that I use and reduce the usage of paper and plastic bags.
Speaking about recycling, my office has a recycle box for paper. I’ve been leaving flyers, paper boxes (even tissue paper boxes) and junk mails in the recycle box.
Lately, I’ve gone to the extreme by saving up all the receipts I get and thereafter, cut them into pieces as stick-it-notes. I usually these notes to my secretary.

Unfortunately, many do not take steps to preserve the environment. Natural resources give us shelter, food, water and raw materials for industries. By polluting the environment, many animals will be affected and some will face extinction.
The extinction of animals will have a great effect on human lives. Those who lived in the late 1990s in the Klang Valley would clearly remember the water supply crisis. Water had to be rationed through trucks and families would fight over them. I was in high school then. My school forced us to bring our own water supply.
The toilet had no water supply as well. It’s a pain to go to the toilet those days. The cubicle walls had loads of brownish stains on them. Man-made brownish stains..euww..
I remember there was once we had to line up for water in front of a rationing truck. Everyone was in line except for one lady who decides to cut queue. She then screamed, “my house hasn’t had water for days!!!”.
Me: WOI LINE UP LA!!
Lady: YOU SHUTTUP!!
Me: NO SHUTTTUP!!! YOU *t00t* LINE UP NOW!!!
Soon I realize that the lady was my friend’s mother. How embarrassing.
WWF-Malaysia has recently launched a sea turtle conservation campaign and www.xes.cx has been approached to help them. Nowadays, sea turtles are one of the rarest things you see when scuba diving or snorkeling. Most of them are either turned into a souvenir or dead.
Sea turtles play a key role in maintaining healthy coral reefs and seagrass beds. These ecosystems are important for the tourist and fisheries industries. Coral reefs are important in preserving the beach and coastal lines. Without them, beaches will disappear and the topless angmoh ladies will have no place to tan themselves.

Green turtle
Green turtles are largely herbivorous, and their constant grazing on sea grasses increases the healthiness and growth rate of seagrass beds.

Leatherback turtle
Leatherback turtles, which forage in the open ocean throughout their life, are the top predators of oceanic jellyfish.
www.xes.cx is running an online donation campaign for this sea turtle conservation campaign.

Wen Dee’s Wedding! 22 March 2008

Finally, my former classmate, former house mate and former guestblogger, Wen Dee has tied the knot. The wedding was extremely grand, 100 over tables of guests and with yummilicious food.

Wen Dee’s husband, Ying How owns the well know wine shop, Vintry at Damansara Heights (and a branch at Uptown Damansara). Being a person that drinks and breathes wine, the wedding theme was obviously on wine. Each table had wine corks spread over and also an empty wine bottle with candles perched on top.

The menu had a wine list with an extremely yummy Gianni Gagliardo, a sweet sparkling white wine. I had 5 glasses of it. It was like drinking at Vintry for free.

The wedding cake on the other hand was shaped like a bottle of wine and sat on a wine barrel.

And for the door gift, each non Muslim patron was given a small bottle of wine. My face was lobster red throughout the wedding.

Fellow former Sheffield University classmates took the effort to attend the wedding. Frank couldn’t make it because he had to attend his firm’s company trip. Frank, you suck big time.

Sheffield Uni ex classmates

The wedding went beautifully. Ying How and Wen Dee both gave a lovely speech. It was so well written that if I’m an English teacher, I’ll give them an A+++ and 5 stars and throw in some Hello Kitty stickers on it.
Their speeches were so well presented until it’s either they are gifted public speakers or they practiced in front of the mirror everyday. Wen Dee, can you post your speech and Ying How’s speech here ah? I want to copy and paste for umm..my friend..
We were also treated with wedding pictures taken in Tuscany, Italy. Lovely.

alamak..my tie croooked..
Congratulations Ying How and Wen Dee! Children next year!!

Yut Kee Restaurant, Kuala Lumpur

Finally, an entry about this restaurant after being a regular of this restaurant for the past 2 years. This restaurant has a history of more than 70 years. It has been around since the 1920s and currently manned by the second generation. Its owner, Jack Lee inherited this restaurant from his father, Mr Lee Tai Yu.

The interior of this restaurant is something to look forward to. Old memorabilia and antiques are peppered around the restaurant with newspaper write ups about them all over the wall. The most prominent thing on the walls of Yut Kee would be the portrait of Mr. Lee Tai Yu.

The service is extremely good. A number of Myanmarese helps out with the restaurant. Every time I step into the restaurant they would greet me “same??” – confirming whether my order is the same as usual. You can see me strolling into the restaurant almost every weekday morning.

Unfortunately, the restaurant gets extremely busy during lunchtime. Seats are limited hence it is normal to share tables with strangers.
During the recent public holiday on 20 March 2008, the xes.cx makan team drove into the heart of Kuala Lumpur for lunch at Yut Kee. We ordered steamed bread, Hainanese Chicken Chop, Lum Mee and half boiled egg.

Hainanese Chicken Chop

Lum Mee

Steamed bread

My personal favourite would be their half boiled egg and steamed bread served with butter and their home made kaya. I must commend Yut Kee for their perfect half boiled egg – not too cooked or raw and shell served at room temperature. It never fails to amaze me how they manage to maintain such quality. The home made kaya on the other hand comes deliciously in a thick texture. You can even tahpao them back home.

My other recommendations would be:
– roti babi
– toasted bread
– lum mee
– Hokkien fried noodles
– swiss roll (with kaya filling)
– Hainanese chicken chop

Nuffnang’s 1st Anniversary Party a.k.a Pajama’s Party

I was there and I was bored. But it was great to meet some old friends and bloggers whom I knew online for quite some time.

Food and beer were free flow whole night but beer ran out before I could get my hands on it. The party had couple of girls in costumes e.g. Nurse, French maid, police women (in hot pants). Wow.. and I thought it was a pajamas party. Notable highlight was the presence of celebrity bloggers such as Kenny Sia, Xia Xue and Dawn Yang (Hot!).

Kota Kinabalu: Kah Hiong Ngiu Chap @ Taman Hilltop

[Note: Last KK trip post!]
Kah Hiong Ngiu Chap is located at Kolam Centre Phase 2, Taman Hilltop. The first thing that caught my attention was the name, “Ngiu Chap”. In most places, it’s spelled and pronounced as “Ngau Chap” which is in Cantonese.

This well known restaurant serves beef brisket noodles. When we arrived, the place was sardine packed. We were fortunate to find a seat inside the shop. Newspaper cutting and a picture of a local celebrity endorsing the Kah Hiong Ngiu Chap lies all over the walls.

I ordered a dried version of their beef brisket noodles. Those who doesn’t know what beef brisket noodles is, beef brisket noodles comes with beef internal organs such as stomach, intestines and not forgetting ligaments. YUMMY!

It took a while for our food to arrive – something you’ll expect from a popular restaurant.

As expected, a bowl of home made chilli lies on the table for patrons. The owners have claimed that their chilli is super spicy and even have a special counter with the words “SUPER HOT!” to sell their super hot chilli.

nomnomnomnomnom

After taking my first bite, I notice that their meat and internal organs were a little bit tough but their beef balls were quite tasty.

However, I find that there’s too much artificial flavouring in the soup. I know because I’m quite sensitive to artificial flavouring. My throat gets tighten up and my heart beat increases dramatically. Note to everyone, cut down on the soup.
