Dining in the Dark @ Changkat Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumput

For my wife’s 31st birthday,  I brought her to Dining in the Dark KL. In Dining in the Dark, you will get to dine in total darkness. You can’t even see your food or utensils!

Dining in the Dark KL is operated by Werner’s and it is located on top of Werner’s at Changkat Bukit Bintang (parking is terribly expensive but try Radius Hotel). The interesting bit is that the manager and waiters of Dining in the Dark KL are blind! Our waiter, Darius, guided us to our table in total darkness. We had to hold on to him.

Once we are seated, we were served with a three course meal which remained a secret after the whole session. A session last about 2 hours. You can eat with your hands or utensils. I hate eating with my bare hands hence I ate using my utensils all the time. It’s tough eating with your utensils in total darkness!

My eyes were quite uncomfortable throughout the session. I guess I’m not used to total darkness.

I must say that the food is not bad. I wasn’t expecting it to be tasty. Sorry, no pictures of the food as we were required to surrender our phones before going into the dark room!

But here’s the menu. You won’t know what you will be eating until the end of the session. If there was a cockroach on top of your food, you wouldn’t know too 😀

Also, the menu changes from time to time. You can tell them to cut out certain stuff if you have allergies or certain preferences. You are also required to come on designated time. They don’t want people walking in and out throughout the session.

Lastly, one of the best parts of this experience is to be able to speak with people who have vision disability. They are just like us. I am told that Werner’s had made efforts to hire blind people to work with them to give them a better life. Kudos to them.

Sumi-ka @ SS15, Subang Jaya,

Two weeks ago, my former dock brief mates, A and myself met for our occasional dinner at Sumi-ka Japanese restaurant. Ever since we completed our dock brief course back in 2005, we still meet up for dinner once in a while. Most of us are still in practice except for Kevin who has gone in-house. Time flies.

This time round, we had dinner at this hidden but well known Japanese yakitori restaurant. It’s a haunt for many Japanese salarymen and families. You know a Japanese restaurant is good if Japanese eats there.

Door leading to Sumi-ka. You’ll see loads of rats and cockroaches before entering the door XD

Raw cabbage with special soy sauce is served as appetizer while you decide what you want. The owner cum Japanese chef will cook it once you decide.

Boss at work

The price of each stick of yakitori ranges from RM4 to RM9. One stick is quick small and it is usually not enough to share.

My personal favourites are the sweet potatoes, beef ribs and shitake mushrooms.

Sweet potatoes wrapped in foil.

It may be quite difficult to find the place. The entrance is a small door and it’s on the 2nd floor. Also, do make reservations if you’re coming in a big group.

The Haute Food Co @ Plaza Damas

Sui Lin recommended this place for its well known sandwiches. A and I made a trip down to The Haute Food Co at Plaza Damas.

It’s a small cafe with limited seats. Some seats are placed outside the cafe to accommodate customers. When we were there on a Saturday afternoon, the place was packed!

I ordered their roast beef sandwich and cafe latte. For their sandwiches, one can choose either white bread or rye bread.

Their latte was alright. Nothing to shout about. It’s a little bit too small. I still prefer Departure Lounge’s coffee.

Sandwich was awesome. Served with a generous serving of fresh salad on the side!

Dessert is highly recommended by many. Unfortunately, I was too full to have one when I was done with my meal.

The price of the meals is not cheap. My roast beef sandwich was RM13.50 and latte were RM8.50. But when it comes to food, I don’t skimp!

Cristang @ Avenue 8, PJ New Town

Richard Wee raved about the pork burger of this place to me since the day I know him. After a few years, I finally tried their famous pork burger with the LoyarBurok gang. Cristang pork burger is dubbed by many as the best pork burger in town.

One notably LoyarBurok participant was King Chai, who is one of the UKM4 gang. The UKM4 is a group of 4 University Kebangsaan Malaysia students who were arrested and are to face disciplinary proceedings under the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (UUCA). UUCA is, among others, a law prohibiting students from joining political parties or take part in political campaigns or protests. The UKM4 were accused of doing so and they are now challenging the constitutionally of the UUCA.You can read about their story here.

While the UKM4 are doing something to change lives at such a young age, I was partying, playing computer games and watching The Simpsons and South Park at their age. Dayum!

So anyway, immediately after settling down, I ordered the fehmes P7 pork burger also known as Petai burger. It didn’t take long for it to be served.

The patty was thick, meaty and juicy! It was topped with grilled back bacon and minced pork petai sambal! Absolutely delicious!

Cristang’s pork burgers are given a prefix “P” followed with a number. According to Richard, each number denotes the number of ingredients in the burger. If Gerald is around, you should ask him about each dish he has on the menu. Each dish is like an art. It’s a mixture of all sorts of ingredients and techniques!

On another note, if you’re thinking of asking for condiments to put on your burger, think again. It’s an insult to a Chef to have his customer putting condiments on his food. To him, the taste of his food is already perfect!

After our scrumptious burger, we had Oreo ice cream and buttercake.

The latter is fried with butter! Richard said it’s the “sure die dessert” whereas Gerald described it as “artery clogging something something die die fat fat something cake”. The buttercake was so sinful until it made Oreo ice cream like a bowl of salad!

Nihon Kai Japanese Restaurant @ Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur

A has been raving about this place being cheap and nice for the longest time. Although I live in Old Klang Road almost all my life, I have never heard of this place. A lot of people says that this place is a hidden gem.

On Valentine’s Day, A and I headed there for dinner. The place was extremely crowded and there was a line to get a table. A was smart to call to make a booking. Nihon Kai was kind enough to save the spot for us although we were half an hour late!

Nihon Kai consists of two floors. The 2nd floor is air conditioned and it has a few private rooms. You may book a room for a function.

We ordered this..

Nihon Kai Sp Maki (RM16) – sashimi and vegetable wrapped together with rice paper and with mayonnaise and ebikko on top!

Sashimi..mmm

A’s set dinner – Grilled Fish

My set dinner – Grilled Unagi Rice (RM34) – very (or maybe too generous) with their unagi. My stomach almost exploded after finishing the stuff we ordered!

Overall, it was good! Food was fresh and ample. Ambiance was great. It was well worth it!

I am told that the place gets pack during dinner. Make a reservation before going!

Strongbow @ Boathouse, TTDI

[Advertorial]

When I was in university, my favourite drink was the Snake Bite Black. It is a mixture of beer, cider and cranberry juice. I was told that the cider that they use is Strongbow cider.

This is me and my former classmate Cindy holding a pint of Snake Bite Black each..

This is Alan after few pints. GAHAHAH

Good old days!

My girlfriend is also a big fan of cider when she was studying in the UK.

However, when we were back in KL, we totally forgot about cider until we recently learned that Strongbow is available at our local pub, Boathouse!

We made a trip down to Boathouse on a Thursday night and ordered a pint of it.

A tall chilly pint of sweet apple cider mmmm.

Straight from the tap!

A sip of it immediately brought many memories. Especially the one during my birthday back in 2001. I had 4 pints of Snake Bite Black at my hall together with my classmates and this happened..

Those drinking snakebites or cider must control intake as drinking them quickly can result to being drunk and belligerent XD

Other than being a watering hole, Boathouse is also well known for its tasty pub food. I had this awesome Bangers and Mash.

If you’re wondering how Strongbow taste like, it’s like mildly sweet carbonated apple juice. It is made of fermented juices of apples. It is currently the best selling apple cider in the world and is currently imported from UK to Malaysia by GAB.

Gulp gulp gulp..

Other than Boathouse, Strongbow is now widely available in many other pubs such as Finnegan’s (Bangsar, Hartamas, Changkat BB, Mid Valley), Laundry Bar, Sid’s Pub, WIP and The Magnificent Fish & Chips Bar.

Penang Curry Rice @ Restoran Ming Yang, Kuchai Lama

Ming Yang Restaurant is your typical Chinese coffeeshop with various stalls selling all sorts of dishes.

My parents like eating at this place but I hate eating at this place. Although they have many stalls, none of them serve tasty food.

Until Penang Curry Rice came along!

Penang Curry Rice is a small stall with various dishes to choose. It’s like economic rice but with a focus on curry.

My personal favourites would be their curry potatoes and petai. Their potatoes are cooked till soft whereas their curry is not spicy (to me).

Yummy petai!

Penang Curry Rice is only open at night and opens till late.

Parking may be a problem. There’s an open parking opposite Ming Yang. It is RM2 per entry.

Beef Noodles @ Restoran Yang Kee @ Taman OUG, Kuala Lumpur

This place was my regular hangout during my college and university days. Whenever the pork noodles place at Sun Sea Restaurant is closed, I’ll head to Yang Kee Restaurant for their awesome beef noodles.

My personal favourite would be their dried version of beef wan tan mee (egg noodles). Their noodles is topped with tasty minced beef whereas a mixture of beef brisket, soft thinly sliced raw slice beef, stomach and beef balls are placed in a bowl of clear broth.

However, they are not very generous with their meat. You may want to ask them to “kah liu”. Not to be calculative, they gave me a slice of beef brisket and 2 pieces of raw slice beef, stomach and beef balls. -_-

Other than beef noodles, they also have yong tau fu. Great side dish.

The place is packed during lunchtime on weekends. Hence, be prepared to wait for your table!

Peng Jiu Fish Head Noodles @ Imbi Market, Kuala Lumpur (友九鱼头米)

After losing my Mayorship of Yut Kee on foursquare, I decided to find solace at Imbi Market. You may remember I blogged about this place many months ago. Ah Weng Koh Hainan Tea was recommended by me as a good breakfast place.

After eating at Ah Weng Koh for a few times, I discovered a stall selling tasty fish head noodles. It’s just a few steps away from Ah Weng Koh and apparently it was recommended by Lonely Planet! You can see a few articles pasted on the stall.

I did a Google search on it but I can’t seem to find any blogs featuring this place.

Anyway, their fish head noodles soup is quite thick and creamy with generous amount of meat. Overall quite tasty.

Picture taken with my camera phone. Pardon the quality.

It comes with a cute little basket to dispose bones or anything you dislike.

The only problem with eating at Imbi Market is that it is bloody hot. Made me sweat like a pig.

My shirt was all wet – as if I just joined a wet t-shirt contest.

Imbi Market is just a few metres away from Pasar Rakyat. Parking space is ample. You may park by the roadside or pay RM2 for private parking.

Snowflake Taiwanese Dessert Secret 雪花栈 @ Kota Damansara

My friend Ken and a few of his friends started a new Snowflake outlet in Kota Damansara. You may recall that I blogged about Snowflake here.

Since it’s A and my favourite dessert house, A and I made a trip to Snowflake at Kota Damansara to say hi to my friends and try out the new place.

The shop was about a week old hence they were short of staff. Ken and his partners were working at the counter – together with the girlfriends of all the partners! Free labour!

As usual, we had the cold Best Seller.

But this time round, Sam of Stylesofia introduced us to another dessert which is sohai bean base. It is called the Soya Ice Series.

It comes with their famous taroballs, peanuts, red beans and grass jelly on top of soya bean flavoured shaven ice. Nais!!

This will be my new hangout spot 😀 Please say hi to me if you see me there!
