Pan Mee @ J&E Little Kitchen, OUG

J&E Little Kitchen used to be in a small stall located at one of the coffee shops of Overseas Union Garden (OUG). That coffee shop was demolished recently and J&E Little Kitchen took over a smaller coffee shop.

There was a time I was crazy over their pan mee. So much so that the boss and her helpers know what I want – dry version of pan mee in the morning and soup based pan mee in the afternoon.

The reason why I like J&E’s pan mee is the texture of their noodles. It’s quite springy and chewy. Also, their broth is quite clear and tasty. Unlike many other pan mee, it doesn’t leave me thirsty (due to MSG I guess) after a bowl.

I don’t like their vegetables in my dish thus I always leave aside. J&E was quick to know that and they replaced the vegetable with extra fish paste – without me asking them. You will notice that the pictures above do not have vegetables in it!

Amazing how little sales and marketing tips to win loyalty of your customers that you can pick up from your neighbourhood hawker stalls.

Restoran Y & L (妙记面粉糕)

I was in Kuantan for a friend’s wedding few weeks ago. My friend arranged for a home stay for me to stay. The room was a little creepy. So much so that I tweeted, “In Kuantan stayin in a creepy hotel. Aaaaaaahhh leave me alooonneeeee”. A friend responded and we eventually ended up talking about food.

One of the places she recommended is Y&L restaurant for its excellent pan mee.

It took me a while to find the place. My only landmark was Public Bank and there were three in town!

The specialty of this shop is pan mee (handmade noodles). I ordered their dry version of pan mee.

It came in a sweet thick sauce, fishballs, sliced mushroom, soft minced meat and. topped with fried ikan bilis. It was very nice! It reminds me of Kota Kinabalu’s sang yuk mee (pork noodles). The soft minced meat deserves special mention because it dissolves in your mouth. mmmm

It’s so nice that I went back there again the next day for lunch!

Restoran Super Kitchen Chilly Pan Mee (Batu Road) @ Chow Yang SS2

Introducing my new addiction, Chilly Pan Mee from Restaurant Super Kitchen Chilly Pan Mee!

Unlike the usual pan mee that I have, this pan mee comes poached eggs. The noodles are slightly thicker and also firmer. The usual anchovies, minced meat and shallots are also mixed with the noodles.

Other than those I have mentioned, you also have a choice of unlimited amount of chili paste which you have mix with your noodles. The chili paste is a little bit too spicy for me and I usually give it a skip. However, the pan mee still taste good with it.

This restaurant has 4 branches. The one I frequent the most is the one located at Chow Yang, SS2. Map is below.

Kota Kinabalu: Siang Siang Pan Mian

My friend brought the www.xes.cx makan team to one restaurant by the name Siang Siang Pan Mian @ Lintas. The interior is quite similar to our Ipoh Oldtown Coffee. However, the place seems a little bit dirty – rubbish was scattered over the floor.

The menu comes in a mixture of English, Malay and Mandarin language – with pinyin for bananas like me. One part you have soup, another part you got mee kuning.

See bottom line…Feet / “Lutut” LOL! Shouldn’t it be feet / “kaki”??

I ordered a soup based pan mee aka kan lau pan mian.

After ordering our food, I spotted a small bowl filled with fresh lime. I was told that the lime juice extracted from the fresh lime is to be mixed with the soup.

Other than the soup based pan mee, we also ordered “teik pan” (hot plate) pan mee. The teik pan pan mee is quite good but their soup based pan mee is so-so. However, after adding some lime juice into my soup based pan mee, the taste of the noodles became quite interesting.
