Of Dream and Ambition…

There is this scene in the Healing Hand III, a HK TVB drama. Two housemen were shaken by their inability to save one of their patient. The supervising doctor walked up to them and ask,
“Why do you want to be a doctor?”
One of the houseman stood up and said,
“I want to save life.”
“I am not asking you about your dream. No one can save someone else’s life but God.” The supervising doctor walked away after saying that.
The second houseman ran up to him and shouted,
“Why do you want to be a doctor!”
“HOPE! I want to give hope to my patients.”
Why do i want to be a lawyer, i asked myself after watching that episode. I want to uphold justice without fear and favour? Is that the reason? Is that my dream or ambition?
I once wrote an essay about my ambition during A-level. I wrote that my goal was to be a successful lawyer. The reason…? I wrote “To help people with their problems”
during the 9 months 20 days of chambering, i asked myself over and over again “Why do i have to lose sleep over someone else’s problem?”
My senior once told me “Frank, solving problem is what we do best in our profession. Taking on other people’s problem is our duty. If you cannot cope with it, you should quit and don’t look back.”
Uphold justice without fear and favour, that is my dream. Solving problem for people is my ambition, and that is what i strive to do best in.

  1. This … is what my dad taught me since little … now … i shall pass it on to you. Use it well.
    Mr Lucas Lian said:
    What man actually needs is not a tensionless state but rather the striving and struggling for some goal worthy of him.
    What he needs is not the discharge of tension at any cost, but the call of a potential meaning waiting to be fulfilled by him.
    Take care.

  2. yup. back in form 2 when we were asked what was our reason we chose our ambition/career…. i remember i said something very corny: “untuk membuktikan bahawa terdapatnya keadilan di dalam dunia ini.”
    translated: “to prove that there’s justice in the world.”
    *goes knock head on wall*

  3. yvonne: Actually, the lecturer asked me why i choose law…i told her tat it’s because of Lord Denning.
    P.S. Lord Denning is a famous judge in England.
    mike: ur dad is a very wise man. thanks for sharing. Next time, i will buy uncle lucas a drink when i drop by kch.
    pennypooh: y u need lawyer? U want to divorce ur bf ar?

  4. Even though I totally agree with what you’ve said. But honestly, it’s easier said than done especially with the heavy workload involved in helping especially demanding people who should arguably be solving their own problems but just because they pay you and you’re expected to be slaving for them šŸ˜›

  5. I still question myself all the time-why do I want to be a lawyer.
    But as I continue, I realise that sometimes there are just too many stupid cases that do no justice to the victims.Money blinds justice and the truth are manipulated.
    When there are too many policemen, there can be no liberty;
    When there are too many soldiers, there can be no peace;
    When there are too many lawyers, there can be no justice.
    So I want to be a lawyer not just to uphold justice but to help the people in need whose struggling in this sick,corrupted and manipulative world.

  6. the child murderers got off scot free today. apparently the prosecution did not present their case well despite the abundance of evidence… wonder how much the DPP made this time.
