sitting ghost…

Last night, Mum told me that one of her tenants is having sleeping problem. Apparently, a ghost would disturb him whenever he sleeps. The ghost would pin him down his bed and he couldn’t move at all. It happened many times hence he couldn’t get proper sleep most of the time. He even consulted a priest. According to the priest, it seems that there’s a dead body buried underneath the house (not the current house I’m living in). Mum didn’t know what to do about it hence she consulted me. However, all I said was to leave them alone. I heard the guy got himself a huge talisman.

I experienced this phenomenon twice. The first time was pretty timed. I woke up feeling immobilized and immediately went back to sleep. However, the second time was hellish. I woke up feeling immobilized. It was pretty scary as I can’t scream or move!

A friend of mine had something worst. There was once he woke up feeling immolized. Then suddenly, he felt a hand moving from the end of the bed towards him. The hand slides slowly on the bedsheet towards him.

According to Chinese belief, whenever someone wakes up feeling immobilized, that means a ghost is pinning you down. However, it seems that there is a scienfitic explanation for this. It has something to do with the way you sleep.

Do you have similiar experiences? 😀

Ahh..thanks to gguni, the mystery is solved..

What is sleep paralysis?

Sleep paralysis consists of a period of inability to perform voluntary movements either at sleep onset (called hypnogogic or predormital form) or upon awakening (called hypnopompic or postdormtal form).

Sleep paralysis may also be referred to as isolated sleep paralysis, familial sleep paralysis, hynogogic or hypnopompic paralysis, predormital or postdormital paralysis

What are the symptoms?
– A complaint of inability to move the trunk or limbs at sleep onset or upon awakening
– Presence of brief episodes of partial or complete skeletal muscle paralysis
– Episodes can be associated with hypnagogic hallucinations or dream-like mentation (act or use of the brain)

Is it harmful?
Sleep paralysis is most often associated with narcolepsy, a neurological condition in which the person has uncontrollable naps. However, there are many people who experience sleep paralysis without having signs of narcolepsy. Sometimes it runs in families. There is no known explanation why some people experience this paralysis. It is not harmful, although most people report feeling very afraid because they do not know what is happening, and within minutes they gradually or abruptly are able to move again; the episode is often terminated by a sound or a touch on the body.

In some cases, when hypnogogic hallucinations are present, people feel that someone is in the room with them, some experience the feeling that someone or something is sitting on their chest and they feel impending death and suffocation. That has been called the “Hag Phenomena” and has been happening to people over the centuries. These things cause people much anxiety and terror, but there is no physical harm.

  1. It’s not the way u sleep or a ghost pinning u down. It’s a condition known as night paralysis. It juz so happens that ur mind wake up b4 ur body does.I get it all da time. But about the hand part, hmmmmmmmmmmm, might be his own.

  2. hahah, i’ve experienced this twice, and it was NOT a good experience. when it happened, i didn’t open my eyes for fear of seeing something i didn’t want to see. however, it IS almost proven to be certain that it is, indeed a medical condition, and the trick i’ve learnt is to sleep sideways, or always have a pillow on top of u when you’re lying on your back. the latter sounds a tad strange, but it’s become a habit…and i’ve never had night paralysis or watchamacallit ever since..

  3. I’ve heard that it’s a condition where you feel you’re paralysed, but once you can move a body part like your finger, you’ll be all right 🙂

  4. Haha…I used to get it about 4,5 times a week for few months last year. It’s always scary, but the best cure for it is to have normal sleeping hours and patterns. Or to have the lights on when you sleep.”It’s not real, it’s not real…”

  5. this means you can get ritilin legally for narcolepsy! i’ll be your very best friend in the whole wide world, if you go to a sleep clinic and get diagnosed! 😉

  6. While i was going through the site “http://www.stanford.edu/~dement/paralysis.html “, I found a link to good sleep hygiene “http://www.stanford.edu/~dement/howto.html” and one of the advise to good sleeping hygiene is: ” Only use your bed for sleeping.Refrain from using your bed to watch TV, pay bills, do work or reading. So when you go to bed your body knows it is time to sleep. Sex is the only exception. “Hahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahhahahahahahahahaha.Man, I luff til i nearly smash my monitor and my pretty neighbour called the police. CRAP.But still, hahahahahahhahahhaha

  7. this “someone’s sitting on me” thing has happened to e so many times I’m not even bothered by them anymore, I just go right back to sleep….It’s not that creepy a thing after awhile…That being said, it might run in families, my sis, mom, and all my mom’s siblings (five of em) have all had it before.

  8. Hahaha, XES…. I have so many stories of these to share…. first time was at Albert house about….3 yrs ago… I was just having my mid day nap, and when I was about to wake up…. I felt something on me…. and I couldn’t move at all, I was gasping for breath… and there was a huge being on top of me… molesting me, ok!! Argh, xEs… don’t ZHAT me in anyway about this ok…it freaked me out… Then the second time and third time happened in Unilodge about a year later…. I was sleeping… and the same thing happened, but without the molestation. Then when I moved to another place at Franklin, I was literally pinned down and I could hear some funny noises of “evil” laughing at me… threatening me, while I couldn’t move…..I think it happened 2x there… .then recently last year… when I moved to CS… it happened again…. I was just sleeping like a pig…when I wanted to wake up…this was the worst… and it felt entirely real… I screamed sooooooooo loud but no one could hear me… I was trying to bang on the wall but I was just suffocating there…. sighzz…..it felt like death in the making….. XES>…. don’t laughhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  9. errr…..when the 1st time i had this prob…..i thought it was sum evil shit pinning me down…but after i had it a few times…and several of my frens having it too…..i think its not sum ghost thingy ler….no big a deal

  10. well, there’s that sleep paralysis thing that gguni was talking about, where the muscles in your body goes into a state of paralysis while you sleep to keep you from thrashing around when you are dreaming. sometimes, you just wake up but your body is still in that paralyzed mode. nothing to be afraid about, no?

  11. Yes….its sleep paralysis. I got alot of damn terrer hallucinations. I used to get it often in high school due to crap sleeping habits. My most terrer hallucination was like this.I wake up, and I can’t move my body. Flames of hell were around me and I hear a boy’s choir singing in latin some fuckin scary song. Then I hear deep deep evil laugh. WTF?! Pray pray….. then it was over. After that…did my bloody research and now I know why it happens. Ever since, rarely happens and when it does happen, no more hallucinations.Your mom’s tenant hasn’t been sleeping properly. Full stop.

  13. i remember my ex-girlfriend telling me about incidents when her dad had the sitting ghost happen to him. About a year ago, i was working overnight and on my lunch break i took a nap on the floor, i was the only one in the building and when i woke up, i could not move, and couldnt even say a word. my hands were on my side and i couldnt move them. i was pinned down for about 2 minutes, the first thing i did was pray and then all of a sudden i jumped up and i ran out of the building, i was so freaked out, i didnt know what to think.
