Kota Kinablu: Sabah Court Houses

Finally, a break from food related entries.

We dropped by Sabah Court House to check out the court. Sabah Court House houses the magistrate court, sessions court and high court of Kota Kinabalu.

On the front gate lies a notice informing that the night courts starts from 6am and ends at 8pm. A night court session is usually held in the evening to hear traffic cases.
I was quite surprised that they hold night courts. Another court in Malaysia which has this practice is the Kuala Lumpur High Court. In most of the Malaysian courts, Court sessions start at 9a.m (in practice, they rarely start at 9am sharp).

In a language that I dont understand..
I guess one of the reasons they have night courts is to reduce the amount of people in Court in the morning (hence more parking space!).

design so lousy..kekekek
We roamed freely around the Court and even managed to get to the backyard. While walking around the empty court, we saw one notice board with three (3) pictures of a face of a little girl. It’s a composite photo of the recent missing girl, Sharlinie in 3 different appearances, bald, with tudong and with hair.

Sharlinie has been missing since she was allegedly taken away while playing at her local playground since January 2008. Many fear that she will suffer the same fate as Nurin Jazlin, who was found sexually assaulted and dead in a bag.
Upon my return to Kuala Lumpur, I found out that the composite pictures were created by wahdi. Great job wahdi!

Kota Kinabalu: Dott’s Egg Tarts

One of the things I don’t see in Kuala Lumpur is small retails selling egg tarts solely. I’ve almost been a big fan of egg tarts and I would order egg tarts whenever I go for dimsum.

Took this when it was closed 😛

While walking around Warisan Square, I bought a piece of egg tart from a small shop by the name Dotts Egg Tarts. Each egg tart costs RM1.10 – quite expensive for KK standard. However, it’s well worth it. Although it’s not freshly out from the oven, the egg custard was still warm and soft. The egg custard was sweet and extremely delicious. I wanted another one when I finished the first one!!!

Soon I realised that Dotts Egg Tart is a chain selling egg tarts. In fact, there are many other shops that sell only egg tarts! This is something that I would recommend Klang Valley entrepreneurs to venture in.

Kota Kinabalu: Port View Seafood Village

Our first dinner was at Port View Seafood Village, a well known restaurant for tourists. It’s located along the beach in Kota Kinabalu City. We were told that the food there is good but a little bit pricey.
After sitting down, a lady came to serve us. We wanted to eat fish..
Me: What fish do you have?

Lady: “Lou pan” and “Chat sing Pan”..

I know that “chat sing pan” (literally means “seven stars fish”) is quite expensive. However, at that time, I forgot the Chinese names of the cheaper fishes. Hence…

Me: How much is “lou pan”? For 2 person..

Lady: oh, around RM200
Me: O_O ok..how about “chat sing pan”??
Lady: About RM15 per 100 gram.
Me: Aahh..ok.. 1 steamed “chat sing pan” please.

We ordered a dish of vegetables to complement our fish. It took a long time for the fish to come.

The fish came and we ate. The fish was fresh from the aquarium. I didn’t know until I was told later but nevertheless it was good. It’s best to eat fresh fish steamed as from there, one can taste the freshness of it.

But when the bill came…RM90 for “chat sing pan”!!! What the fish!!?!? RM90 FOR FRESHNESS??? I GIVE FRESH FART RM90 CAN??? THIS IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE FISH I’VE EVAAAA EATTEEEENNNN$@$!!1111

Kota Kinabalu: Siang Siang Pan Mian

My friend brought the www.xes.cx makan team to one restaurant by the name Siang Siang Pan Mian @ Lintas. The interior is quite similar to our Ipoh Oldtown Coffee. However, the place seems a little bit dirty – rubbish was scattered over the floor.

The menu comes in a mixture of English, Malay and Mandarin language – with pinyin for bananas like me. One part you have soup, another part you got mee kuning.

See bottom line…Feet / “Lutut” LOL! Shouldn’t it be feet / “kaki”??

I ordered a soup based pan mee aka kan lau pan mian.

After ordering our food, I spotted a small bowl filled with fresh lime. I was told that the lime juice extracted from the fresh lime is to be mixed with the soup.

Other than the soup based pan mee, we also ordered “teik pan” (hot plate) pan mee. The teik pan pan mee is quite good but their soup based pan mee is so-so. However, after adding some lime juice into my soup based pan mee, the taste of the noodles became quite interesting.

Kota Kinabalu: First Day

One of the things I hate about travelling is the waking up part. I barely had an hour sleep after returning from Mr and Mrs Timothy Tan’s open house. I woke up at 5am and left the house at 6am to catch my 750am flight via Air Asia.
Unfortunately, my bus from KL Sentral to LCC left at 620am and arrived at 720am thus barring us taking our flight. We were then directed to another counter which I think serves people who are late for their flight.
We had to fork out an additional RM300 for a later flight. It seems that the pilot had barred us from entering the flight despite the fact that there were more than 20 minutes before take off.
While waiting for a turn, a family of 6 went berserk after being denied entry to their flight. I guess they were late for their flight too. One of the family members, a middle aged lady, was so angry that she started screaming, “PUKIMAKKK!!! APA LU PUNYA NAMA AAAHH??? BAGI SAYA LU PUNYA NAMA!! SAYA MAU POT SAMA LUU!!! CILAKAK PUNYA ORANGGG!!!”.
BWAHAHAHHAHA I ALMOST A WANTED TO LAUGH OUT LOUD.
Apparently the officer who refused entry to the family of 6 refused to give his name to them. Security was called in and the family of 6 were escorted away. I overheard that they will be brought to the police station for verbal abuse. LOL
After a 2 hours journey, we arrived at Kota Kinabalu Airport. First destination, lunch!!!
To be continue..

Back from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Back from Kota Kinabalu!
Congrats to Justin and Joey on their wedding. It was beautiful .The garden reception by the beach with a small cabana puts the icing on this wedding. I can’t wait to see the wedding pictures by Anna-Rina.
Anyway, the trip was excellent. We ate and ate non stop. I managed to try many of the famous local dishes within 4 days. Unfortunately, due to the Chinese New Year break, many shops were not open. I didn’t manage to try the famous Roti Kahwin as the well known shop was closed for Chinese New Year.
Kota Kinabalu (KK), the capital of Sabah, is a city with half a million people. The lifestyle is slow and calm – makes you want to retire now and stay there forever. However, the place is heavily commercialised. You can see famous retail chains such as Starbucks and Coffee Bean in every corner. There’s also couple of Big Apple Donuts around.
Shopping centres are springing like mushrooms over KK. There are probably more than 10 malls and they are also building one huge shopping centre by the name 1 Borneo. In the Klang Valley, we have a huge shopping centre by the name 1 Utama. Not sure whether or not they are related.
Here are some pictures of KK city.

I saw this soft drink machine at one shopping centre in KK city. It’s a Gardenia soft drink machine!
Gardenia is well known for its pre-packaged bread products. When I told my Kuala Lumpur friends that Gardenia sells soft drinks, they didn’t believe me until I showed them the above picture. I didn’t manage to try any of them. I wonder how does it taste like..hmmm..like bread flavoured soft drink???
I briefly browsed through their website at http://www.gardenia.com.my/products.html and I don’t see any soft drinks listed in their products section. By looking at the above picture, I could see that they have cola, sohai bean, orange, winter melon, grass jelly, root beer, green tea and ice cream soda.
Has anyone tried this before??

Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

I’ll be off to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah to attend a wedding. This will be my first time stepping in to Kota Kinabalu. Other than the wedding, I’m looking forward to the food – roti kahwin @ Fook Yuen Kedai Kopi and Tuaran Mee @ Tuaran!

BRB!!

Ipoh Road Trip – Part VI – Kellie’s Castle

The last time I came here was probably when I was in primary school. The place has changed a lot. Entrance fee of RM4 has been imposed, the place has been beautified and some restoration work has been done.
Kellie’s Castle is an unfinished mansion which was abandoned after the death of its owner. This mansion is built on top of a hill – with an underground cellar and even an elevator, a unique fixture in 1915. Further, on the highest floor, there is a rooftop courtyard for parties.

This tower is to house the elevator

Ipoh Road Trip – Part V – Food!

As I was saying, this trip was supposed to be a climbing trip but turned into an eating trip. Our first destination was one stretch of hawker stalls near Sam Tet School. Initially we wanted to try the famous Ipoh Taugeh (bean sprout) Chicken Rice at Onn Kei Restaurant but the place was full.

Restaurant Man U…nited..wtf..

We ordered so much until my stomach felt like exploding.

On our second day, we had lunch at Kam Kei, a restaurant serving seafood noodles. The noodles are..zomgg..excellent! Generous servings of prawns too! Both dry and soup version of the noodles are good but I would recommend that one try their dry version as it comes with bowl of noodles with unique mushroom sauce.

Ipoh White Coffee..yummy
